Obstructions to Revival

We have a natural bent, inherited from our first parents, to make excuses, try to justify, shift blame and cover up things that the Bible makes clear should have no place in our lives. These things in the lives of those who know Jesus as Lord and Savior are major obstructions to experiencing revival. Satan’s strategy has been so successful that he has been using it ever since Adam and Eve. It is an appeal to: “…. the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life.” (From I John 2: 16). We have five senses: sight, taste, touch, smell and hearing. Think with me: Sinful things can “look” attractive; some sinful things appeal to our “taste;” we “touch” some unclean things; some sin “smells” good and even “hearing” can be wrong. Add to that, we love to look at and listen to things that make us proud. The “bottom line” is that Satan knows how to “play us.” Instead of being victims, God’s word gives us insight on how to resist the devil. This excerpt from Hebrews 5:14, reveals our responsibility for discipline; for self-control.  It speaks of those: “….who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.” When we digest the ” strong “meat of the Word,” we learn to discipline, to control what we see, hear, taste, touch, even what we hear, instead of falling for “the wiles of the devil.” We can discern what is good and what is evil and “resist the devil.” A Spiritually strong “will” can counter hi-jacked emotions! James Rowe’s hymn, “I Would Be Like Jesus,” expresses a determination that we need to make a part of our lives: “Earthly pleasures vainly call me; I would be like Jesus; nothing worldly shall enthrall me, I would be like Jesus. He has broken every fetter, I would be like Jesus; that my soul may serve Him better, I would be like Jesus. All the way from earth to glory, I would be like Jesus; telling o’er and o’er the story, I would be like Jesus. That in Heaven He may meet me, I would be like Jesus; that His words “Well done” may greet me, I would be like Jesus. Be like Jesus – this my song, in the home and in the throng; be like Jesus, all day long, I would be like Jesus.” Selah! God give us “Bible steel” in our sanctified wills to refuse Satan’s enticements. No more excusing, blame-shifting, justifying or covering up things that are wrong. Those who are His: “…. have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.” (From Galatians 5:24). We are to live that out!   Ron
