Don’t Waste Your Time!

Don’t waste your time reading (or listening) to the Bible! Don’t, that is, waste your time just reading it like you might read any book or listening like you would to a lecture, speech or a “reading” of some kind. The Bible can never be understood “Spiritually,” unaided. You might read it, or think of it, as history, poetry, inspiring and challenging stories, biographies, etc. If that is all you see, you’ve missed the most important reason why God gave us the Bible. God is addressing us! He is saying something to us! He’s calling us to attention. Like a parent addressing a child might say, “Listen up!” There is, however, a very important difference. We can’t read or listen with Spiritual understanding unless the Holy Spirit enables us to do so. Only when we have a heart for God and His Truth; when we want to know God; when we are open to act upon what He says to us, can we begin to really read. Then, we can know that what we read is actually a message from God; that what we hear is God speaking to us through His Word, the Bible! The Spirit of God communicates God’s voice, and what God is saying to our minds and emotions. Jesus, in John 6:63, explains: “It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, (they) are spirit, and (they) are life.” Consider these pertinent extracts from Mary A. Lathbury’s  hymn, “Break Thou the Bread of Life:” “Break now the bread of life, dear Lord, to me …..Beyond the sacred page I seek Thee, Lord; my spirit  pants for Thee, O living Word. O send your Spirit now, dear Lord, to me, that He may touch my eyes and make me see. Show me the truth revealed within Thy Word,  for in Thy Book revealed I see Thee, Lord.” Selah! If you know Jesus as Savior and Lord, make sure you are listening to His voice in every line! “Speak, Lord, in the stillness, while I (we) wait on Thee, hushed my (our) heart(s) to listen, in expectancy.” (“Speak, Lord, in the Stillness.” -by E. May Grimes).     Ron
