The Most Essential Part of the Fruit

Every part of this fruit is extremely important to a full, healthy result. Today’s part is what gives life to all the parts. This part is “faith.” Bible scholars tell us that the basic meaning here is “faithfulness.” I have no problem with that. However, in order to be full of faith, we must take in faith. We are told that faithfulness here speaks of stability, reliability, and consistency. Only as faith is taken in (see Romans 10:27) and increases and strengthens will we see stable, reliable, and consistent Christians. Faith is what gives cohesion to this remarkable fruit! All of this is why “faith to be saved” should be better explained to potential converts. At the outset, these seekers should understand that they are trusting (same idea as faith) Jesus for salvation and with the control of their lives. As faith strengthens and grows, the maturing Christian has unshakable confidence in God and His Word. Faith is a shield against every incoming missile of evil that the devil can contrive. Paul’s inspired exhortation in Ephesians 6:16 is for us, also: “Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked (one).” Louisa M. R. Stead’s hymn, “‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus,” speaks of this kind of faith: “‘Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus, just to take Him at His Word; just to rest upon His promise, just to know, “Thus saith the Lord.” I’m so glad I learned to trust Thee, precious Jesus, Savior, Friend; and I know that Thou art with me, will be with me to the end. Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him! How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er! Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus! O for grace to trust Him more!” Selah! Exercising our wills to yield to Jesus and receive Him as Savior and Lord is the beginning of a lifetime of “willing” to trust Him and His Word, no matter what happens in our lives. That kind of faith will never be disappointed!   Ron
