The Source of Genuine Love

Yesterday, we learned that we are to love people God’s way. We are to see them through His eyes. This will increase the impact that God will have on others through our lives. Where does that kind of love have its source? The answer is found in Romans 5:5. “….the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.” When we learn more of His love in His Word and gain in our realization of how we are objects of that love, our hearts will open to the Holy Spirit’s love flowing through us to touch others with His love. In I Timothy 4:12, Paul adds to the list of things that increase the impact of our lives on others: “Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit.” Our spirit is our inner being; our heart. It is our old dead spirit made alive to Him. It is His life in us. The more that His life gains control in us, the more love will flow through us and spread further and further. When people see God’s nature really active in us, our renewed spirit will make an impact. God’s work in our spirit will make us even more of an example of the believers. Thomas O. Chisholm wrote the hymn, “Oh, to Be Like Thee!” The words convey the type of heart, of spirit, that impacts others: “Oh! to be like Thee, blessed Redeemer, this is my constant longing and prayer; gladly I’ll forfeit all of earth’s treasures, Jesus, Thy perfect likeness to wear. Oh! to be like Thee, full of compassion, loving, forgiving, tender and kind, helping the helpless, cheering the fainting, seeking the wand’ring sinner to find. Oh! to be like Thee, full of compassion, loving, forgiving, tender and kind, helping the helpless, cheering the fainting, seeking the wand’ring sinner to find. Oh! to be like Thee, Lord, I am coming, now to receive th’ anointing divine; all that I am and have I am bringing, Lord, from this moment all shall be Thine. Oh! to be like Thee, while I am pleading, pour out Thy Spirit, fill with Thy love, make me a temple meet for Thy dwelling, fit me for life and Heaven above. Oh! to be like Thee, oh! to be like Thee,  Blessed Redeemer, pure as Thou art; come in Thy sweetness, come in Thy fullness; stamp Thine own image deep on my heart.” Selah! We have considered four things that combine to make us the kind of example that God wants to make us: Word (how we use our voices), Conversation (our manner of life), Charity (God’s love through us) and Spirit (our hearts full of His love). Tomorrow, Lord willing, let’s add Faith.   Ron
