A Real-Life Illustration

Substitution is not only a theological concept, it is basic to forgiveness. We pay for our sin(s) or a substitute pays for them. The “bottom line” is that the penalty due our sin(s) must be paid. There is only “ONE” that can bear the punishment for the sin(s) of all of mankind. His name is Jesus! Being infinite God, His sacrifice is sufficient to pay the entire sin debt of humanity for all of time. All who receive Jesus, as Savior and Lord, find that their penalty has been paid by Him. We find, in Mark 15:1-11, a real-life illustration of substitution: “And straightway in the morning the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council, and bound Jesus, and carried (Him) away, and delivered Him to Pilate. And Pilate asked Him, Art Thou the King of the Jews? And He answering said unto him, Thou sayest (it). And the chief priests accused Him of many things: but He answered nothing. And Pilate asked Him again, saying, Answerest Thou nothing? behold how many things they witness against Thee. But Jesus yet answered nothing; so that Pilate marvelled. Now at (that) feast he released unto them one prisoner, whomsoever they desired. And there was (one) named Barabbas, (which lay) bound with them that had made insurrection with him, who had committed murder in the insurrection. And the multitude crying aloud began to desire (him to do) as he had ever done unto them. But Pilate answered them, saying, Will ye that I release unto you the King of the Jews? For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him for envy. But the chief priests moved the people, that he should rather release Barabbas unto them.” The crowd was stirred up by the religionists to appeal for an insurrectionist and murderer to be set free and for Jesus, the Sinless One to be crucified. Barabbas was released and Jesus was crucified. We deserve the full penalty for breaking God’s laws. Jesus paid that penalty in full, as our Substittute! When we receive Him as Savior and Lord, we go “free!” “When God of old the way of life would teach to all His own,  He placed them safe beyond the reach of death, by blood alone. By Christ, the sinless Lamb of God, the precious blood was shed, when He fulfilled God’s holy Word, and suffered in our stead. O soul, for thee salvation thus by God is freely giv’n; the blood of Christ atones for sin, and makes us meet for Heav’n. The wrath of God that was our due, upon the Lamb was laid; and by the shedding of His blood, the debt for us was paid. How calm the Judgment hour shall pass to all who do obey the Word of God, and trust the blood, and make that Word their stay! It is His Word, God’s precious Word, it stands forever true; when I the Lord shall see the blood,  I will pass over you.” (“I Will Pass Over You,” By D. W. Whittle). Selah! He has paid our sin(s) penalty; if we have received Him, or will receive Him, it is paid forever! If we refuse Him, we will pay our sin(s) debt forever!  Is He your “Substitute?” If not, will you receive Him as your Savior, Substitute and Lord?     Ron
