A Death Sentence

The trial of Jesus was the greatest miscarriage of justice this world has ever seen or ever will see. He was convicted and condemned for speaking the Truth. In Mark 14:55-64, this trial is recorded: “And the chief priests and all the council sought for witness against Jesus to put Him to death; and found none. For many bare false witness against Him, but their witness agreed not together. And there arose certain, and bare false witness against Him, saying, we heard Him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands. But neither so did their witness agree together. And the high priest stood up in the midst, and asked Jesus, saying, Answerest Thou nothing? what (is it which) these witness against Thee? But He held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked Him, and said unto Him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed? And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. Then the high priest rent his clothes, and saith, What need we any further witnesses? Ye have heard the blasphemy: what think ye? And they all condemned him to be guilty of death.” Religion will always war with anything that resists its presumed monopoly on truth. Real Truth is a threat to religion. Jesus had very recently taught that the old system would be rejected; it will be new wine, in new wine bottles; the “Truth” in His church! Ultimately, this “Truth” will triumph over all errors and lies. Paradoxically, religion was on trial by the Truth! Jesus died, religion continued. However, Jesus was victorious over death and religion will not survive! Martin Luther gives us reassuring words in the third stanza of, “A Mighty Fortress is Our God,” regarding ultimate triumph: “And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, we will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us; the Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him; his rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure, one little word shall fell him!” Selah! There are but two ways to respond to Jesus; reject Him or embrace Him as perfect Truth and take Him as Savior and Lord!    Ron
