Untwisting the Scriptures!

One of the clever tricks used by Satan to mislead us is his ability to quote Scripture. However, as most of us know, he twists it to make it say what he wants it to say. If we are knowledgeable in God’s Word, we can untwist that which he twists. We can be deceived, or we can be discerning, depending on our God-given ability to “rightly (divide) the Word of Truth.” (See II Timothy 3:16). Jesus demonstrates this discernment in Mark 12:18-27 when He exposes the trap that the Sadducees tried to spring on Him: “Then come unto Him the Sadducees, which say there is no resurrection; and they asked Him, saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If a man’s brother die, and leave (his) wife (behind him), and leave no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. Now there were seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and dying left no seed. And the second took her, and died, neither left he any seed: and the third likewise. And the seven had her, and left no seed: last of all the woman died also. In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise, whose wife shall she be of them? for the seven had her to wife. And Jesus answering said unto them, Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God? For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in Heaven. And as touching the dead, that they rise: have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spake unto him, saying, I (am) the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err. These Sadducees were like the religious liberals in our day. (They were sad, you see). They seemed to be mocking the Scriptures, using an illustration that had no bearing on life in Heaven. Jesus exposed their lack of Biblical understanding. He untwisted what they had twisted, leaving them without a leg to stand on. In the hymn, “Be Up, My Soul, and Doing,” John H. Sammis urges commitment to knowing the Word: “Be up, my soul, and doing, be strong in the Spirit’s might, a faithful workman showing thyself in the Master’s sight. The shield of truth is o’er Him, his mail is resistless light, he’s not ashamed before Him, who handles the Word aright. The Word of truth dividing, with prayer unto God its source, heed not the world’s deriding, hold straight in the Word thy course. Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth.” Selah! Biblical understanding requires disciplined pursuit of God’s Truth in His Word. This is only possible for those who are born again and who depend on the Holy Spirit’s enlightenment.   Ron
