Religious Camouflage

Camouflage is designed to cover or hide what’s underneath. Religion does the same thing. Covered with the cloak of external righteousness, the Pharisees and some scribes criticized Jesus’ disciples for not complying with their rules and regulations. Mark 7:1-6 speaks of this: “Then came together unto Him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from Jerusalem. And when they saw some of His disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen, hands, they found fault. For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders. And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables. Then the Pharisees and scribes asked Him, Why walk not Thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands? He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias  prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me.” Jesus confronted these hypocrites with a scathing indictment in six searing words: “their heart is far from me!” No matter how good and correct one seems to be to others who observe, if the heart is far from Jesus, it is a cover-up! “The Lord, the Judge, His Churches Warns,” by Isaac Watts, addresses this matter: “The Lord, the Judge, His churches warns: let hypocrites attend and fear, who place their hope in rites and forms, but make not faith nor love their care. They dare rehearse His awful name with lips of falsehood and deceit; a friend or brother they defame, and soothe and flatter those they hate. They watch to do their neighbors wrong, yet dare to seek their Maker’s face; they take His cov’nant on their tongue, but break His laws, abuse His grace. And, while His judgments long delay, they grow secure and sin the more; they think He sleeps, as well as they, and put far off the evil hour. O dreadful hour, when God draws near, and sets their crimes before their eyes! Anguish their guilty souls shall tear, and no deliv’rer dare to rise.” Selah! One of the deadliest mistakes a human being can make is to assume that outward appearance can hide a corrupt heart from the eyes of God!   Ron

Now my soul is free, within my heart’s a song!
Buried in the deepest sea…YES! That’s good enough for me!
I will live eternally! Hallelujah! My sins are gone!
