Paying Attention

I wonder how many of us do more than casual listening. We shut out things that we don’t have any interest in hearing. We ignore orders that we don’t want to follow (and then make excuses?). We often listen just enough to insert what we want to say. We resist sales pitches. That’s mostly wise. Sometimes, however, we might miss a good deal for lack of careful thought. We let our minds wander when listening to a message from God. It may be the spoken Word, written Word or preached Word. How much of what God is saying is actually heard? Jesus addresses this in Mark 4:24-25: “And He said unto them, ‘Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given.’  For he that hath, to him shall be given: and he that hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he hath.” In other words, listen carefully to God! If we do, He will trust us with more and will make wonderful changes in our lives. He will bless others, through us. Be careful what we “dish out” to others; if we offer them little, we will receive little. Ephesians 4:29 reminds us: “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.” if we gain Truth from God and use it, we gain; if we don’t use it, we lose it! In the hymn: “O Happy Is the Man Who Hears, Michael Bruce shares these wise words: “O happy is the man who hears instruction’s warning voice; and who celestial Wisdom makes his early, only choice. For she has treasures greater far than east or west unfold; and her rewards more precious are than all their stores of gold. In her right hand she holds to view, a length of happy days; riches with splendid honours are what her left displays. She guides the young with innocence, in pleasure’s paths to tread, a crown of glory she bestows upon the hoary head. According as her labours rise, so her rewards increase; her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.” Selah! God listens to us, who are born again! How can we not listen to Him?  Ron

  1. Another masterpiece, Ron. The sermon at our church this morning was, Describing the Indescribable. It was very good, and during the messaged about sharing our faith, I got to thinking about how well I listen to God. This post really confirmed what the Lord and I discussed.

    God bless,
