God Doesn’t Speak to People Today?

Some have wondered why God doesn’t speak to us today. They think of how God spoke to certain people in the Old Testament times and wonder, why not today.  However, they are very much mistaken! Hebrews 1:2 makes very clear to us that God speaks to us today: “God, Who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by His Son, Whom He hath appointed heir of all things, by Whom also He made the worlds.” Jesus is the living Word; He speaks the written Word to His own. When we have ears to hear, the written Word enters our hearts and minds as living words. In John 6:63, we have Jesus’ own confirmation of that: “….the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” Do you grasp the wonder of this? Suppose that God spoke to us with an audible voice today. How long before the memory of what He said would fade or even be forgotten? Today, we have all kinds of ways to access the written Word. As we take advantage of this, are we only acquiring information, or do we have ears (and hearts) to hear the voice of God speaking to us personally? And, do we respond appropriately? I wonder how the people that heard God speak to them directly would feel, if they could have a permanent record of His Words in a book! In P. P. Bliss’ hymn, “Wonderful Words of Life,” he has caught the wonder of God speaking through His Word. He wrote, “Sing them over again to me, wonderful words of life; let me more of their beauty see, wonderful words of life; words of life and beauty, teach me faith and duty. Christ, the blessed One, gives to all wonderful words of life; sinner, list to the loving call, wonderful words of life; all so freely given, wooing us to Heaven. Sweetly echo the gospel call, wonderful words of life; offer pardon and peace to all, wonderful words of life; Jesus, only Savior, sanctify forever, beautiful words, wonderful words, wonderful words of life; beautiful words, wonderful words, wonderful words of life!” Selah! You never are too deaf to hear God speak, if you have Spiritually quickened eyes and ears. Really listen; you’ll hear His voice! Then, respond!    Ron

  1. A big AMEN to this article ! ! ! Of course the Holy Spirit can speak to us through impressions and leadings. These impressions must always be in line with the Word of God. I have seen this abused with people claiming that the Holy Spirit impressed them with something and it wasn’t the Holy Spirit at all. Thanks for today’s post.

    God bless,
