Pre-History Assurance

Before the world began, God chose those that He knew would receive salvation. That should give a great assurance to anyone who has surrendered to Jesus as Savior and Lord. We know when we asked Him to save us. Was that where our assurance began? No, it was granted before “time” began! Think carefully on Ephesians 1:4. Paul wrote: “According as He hath chosen us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love.” Note, it says “chosen.” It doesn’t say “forced” or “induced.” God knew, before the foundation of the world, who would willingly receive His wonderful gift of salvation; He knew who would yield their hearts to Him. These, He chose to be: “holy and without blame before Him in love.” All we need to do, to be sure this blessed assurance is ours, is to be certain that we responded to the Gospel invitation, trusted Jesus for salvation and are committed to Him reigning in our lives as Lord. If we have done that, God knew we would and chose us! James G. Small’s hymn, “I’ve Found a Friend, O Such a Friend,” speaks of Christ’s love before we knew Him, our coming to Him, and our assurance of being with Him forever!  This is how he put it: “I’ve found a friend, O such a friend! Christ loved me ere I knew Him. He drew me with the cords of love, and thus He bound me to Him; and round my heart still closely twine those ties which naught can sever, for I am His, and Christ is mine, forever and forever. I’ve found a friend, O such a friend!  He bled, He died to save me; and not alone the gift of life, but His own self He gave me; naught that I have my own I call,  I hold it for the Giver; my heart, my strength, my life, my all are His, and His forever. I’ve found a friend, O such a friend!  All pow’r to Him is given, to guard me on my onward course, and bring me safe to heaven: th’ eternal glories gleam afar to nerve my faint endeavor; so now to watch, to work, to war, and then to rest forever. I’ve found a friend, O such a friend! so kind and true and tender, so wise a counselor and guide, so mighty a defender!  From Him who loves me now so well what pow’r my soul can sever? Shall life or death or earth or hell?  No, I am His forever.” Selah! God saw our response to Jesus before time began; Jesus entered history to enable us to make our response. Once we responded to Him, He sealed us, guaranteeing us our permanent place in His Presence. Blessed assurance!!     Ron

  1. That is such a precious hymn about a Friend in Jesus. It stirred my heart as a young person – to be drawn into a closer relationship with my Lord and Savior.
