A Multi-Function Center

As people come to know Jesus as Savior and Lord, they need to be cared for in various ways. Initially, they need a nursery. While that can be taken care of by one person, the ideal nursery is the local Bible-believing church. Here, they can be supplied with milk and grow to handling meat. Here they can be trained, taught, corrected, encouraged, challenged and learn to take responsibility. In other words, with loving support, they can mature in discipline (become a disciple). The church should also provide an environment that is conducive to worship. Another function is to be able to effectively help those who are wounded. It is also a place where the whole local church family can get together for fellowship and enjoy each other. The family can discuss needs and opportunities and find ways to deal with them. They can prayerfully and financially enable the local assembly to share the offer of salvation, as well as continuing to keep the “center” properly functioning. This center is also a screening agency, being careful and diligent to expose and eliminate error. It can also carefully examine candidates for leadership, and for mission, and be sure they are sound and qualified. They are also to provide and promote corporate Biblical prayer. Best of all, it is where we can and should enjoy, with each other, the Presence of our blessed Lord! This is exactly what Paul was inspired to address in Ephesians 4:11-15: “And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: that we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; but speaking the truth in love, may grow up into Him in all things, which is the Head, even Christ.” George Askin’s hymn, “Brethren, We Have Met to Worship, “seems to have grasped much of what this “center” is all about: “Brethren, we have met to worship and adore the Lord our God; will you pray with all your power, while we try to preach the Word?  All is vain unless the Spirit of the Holy One comes down; brethren, pray, and holy manna will be showered all around. Brethren, see poor sinners round you slumb’ring on the brink of woe; death is coming, hell is moving, can you bear to let them go? See our fathers and our mothers, and our children sinking down; brethren, pray and holy manna will be showered all around. Sisters, will you join and help us? Moses’ sister aided him; will you help the trembling mourners who are struggling hard with sin? Tell them all about the Savior, tell them that He will be found; sisters, pray, and holy manna will be showered all around. Let us love our God supremely, let us love each other, too; let us love and pray for sinners, till our God makes all things new. Then He’ll call us home to heaven, at His table we’ll sit down; Christ will gird Himself, and serve us with sweet manna all around.” Selah! Let us do our part to make sure that our local church is this kind of “center!”  Ron
