Objects of Worship-3

The ancients (and many people today) took God-given materials and made idols with them, and then worshipped what they had made. Many people today do this same thing. One modern version of this idolatry is technology. This is like trees from which idols are made. The trees are a gift to bless and serve mankind. Today, we take God-given materials and make computers and other gadgets. These things were meant to bless and serve. Many have devoted themselves to learn more about and keep abreast of all the latest gadgets. They lose themselves in a cyber world. (How many Christians have fallen into this trap)? An inordinate amount of time, energy and money is given to these fascinating, curiosity provoking, admiration inspiring machines and to learn what they can do. I wonder what would happen if we gave that same amount of time, energy and money to growing in Godliness. We are the ones responsible for how we relate to these gifts. Will they serve us or will we idolize them? We would do well to heed the warning found in Deuteronomy 11:16: “Take heed to yourselves, that your heart be not deceived, and ye turn aside, and serve other gods, and worship them.” These tools of technology can and do take over lives. The only way to avoid that trap is to heed Mark 12:30: “And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.” The more we are shaped by God’s Word, the more we will love God. A born again child of God can have victory all the way along. In her hymn by that name, Eliza E. Hewitt explains how we can experience victory (even over devotion to idols): “Have we learned the secret of the Christian’s pow’r? Victory, victory, all the way along; list’ning and obeying, trusting every hour, victory all along through Jesus. By the Word indwelling, “watching unto prayer,” victory, victory, all the way along; resting, while we serve Him, in His keeping care, victory all along through Jesus. Let Him do the planning, let Him use our days, victory, victory, all the way along; yielding to His Spirit, His shall be the praise; victory all along through Jesus.” Selah! There is only room for One on the Throne, in a true Christian’s life; any would-be usurpers must be evicted immediately!  Ron
