Objects of Worship

In our world today, most people would consider bowing down to some statue or symbol to be ignorant and superstitious. However, we bow our minds and hearts to today’s objects of worship and have little or no awareness of doing so. One such altar at which multitudes bow is the altar of education. Reading this, you might think that I’m against education. What I am against is what is called “education.” A vast amount of today’s so called “education” is indoctrination into a non-Christian worldview, a secular mindset. Satan is trying to program people to think what he wants them to think. A string of degrees after someone’s name usually indicates that he or she has mastered the content of what they have been taught. What have they been taught? Is it truth or is it what their teachers assume is truth? Proverbs 1:7 speaks of valid education: “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” True education begins and ends with God! Knowledge of things like how to build a house or repair a car is not the issue here. The issue is what we are asked to believe. Blindly admiring some teacher’s academic achievements, multitudes of today’s students adopt his or her beliefs for their own. They kneel at the altar of his or her supposed intellectual superiority. Even new or young Christians can (and too often do) fall into this false worship. Constant and serious study of God’s Word will enable us to escape this subtle idolatry. The first stanza of Phillip Doddridge’s hymn: “Do not I love thee, O my Lord?” speaks to this: “Do not I love Thee, O my Lord?  Behold my heart and see; and cast each idol from its throne, that dares to rival Thee!” Selah! Consider the thinking and answers that this world accepts and compare them with God’s thinking and answers. No contest!    Ron
