Thinking about Thinking

Have you given serious thought to thinking? How many really think? What impacts our thoughts? Is reason in control or do our emotions control our decisions? When we gather at a local church, are our minds engaged or elsewhere? Do we focus on God and do we carefully listen, really listen, to what God is telling us? Do we check the message against Scripture to be sure it is true and/or correct? if our minds are controlled by our emotions, we will be deflected into damaging paths. If our minds are guided by God’s Word, we will have stability. Emotions are powerful motivators. If people wouldn’t be swayed by “feelings,” how many advertising dollars would dry up? If we go by careful reasoning based on Scriptural principles, we won’t fall prey to being manipulated like puppets on strings. The Bible’s teachings and commands will help us answer questions like these: Is it right, Is it wrong? is it helpful? Is it wise? Is it True? Is it necessary? Is it kind? In Hebrews 5:12-14, the writer of Hebrews chided some Christians for their immaturity and lack of discernment: “For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of  righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.” Babies go by “feelings;” Spiritually mature Christians go by God’s counsel. In the hymn: “Take Thou Our Minds, Dear Lord,” William H. Foulkes has given us some worthwhile thoughts: “Take Thou our minds, dear Lord, we humbly pray, give us the mind of Christ each passing day; teach us to know the truth that sets us free; grant us in all our thoughts to honor Thee. Take Thou our hearts, O Christ, they are Thine own; come Thou within our souls and claim Thy throne; help us to shed abroad Thy deathless love; use us to make the earth like heaven above. Take Thou our wills, Most High! Hold Thou full sway; have in our inmost souls Thy perfect way; guard thou each sacred hour from selfish ease; guide Thou our ordered lives as Thou dost please. Take Thou ourselves, O Lord, heart, mind, and will; through our surrendered souls Thy plans fulfill.  We yield ourselves to Thee—time, talents, all; we hear, and henceforth heed, Thy sovereign call.” Selah! Discipleship includes disciplined thinking! Good “feelings” are the results of sound thinking, solidly based on the Word of God. Ron
