And the Winner is…????

Ephesians 6 is one place where we are told that we are in a very intense battle. Satan and his accomplices are committed to damage, disable and destroy mankind. They are even more determined to bring down genuine Christians. It is a tragic, foolish, dangerous and costly mistake to underestimate our enemies. Nevertheless, many Christians read about this battle and seem to respond in this anemic way: “Hmmmm, interesting! Well, we do seem to be in a battle.” After agreeing with this truth, few actually prepare and participate. Most are more likely to be victims than victors. In II Corinthians 10:1-6, Paul is defending his apostleship. Within that context, he lays out our responsibility to resist enemy attack. We, in God’s strength and equipping, are to bring down our enemy in defeat. Here are the kind of weapons we are to use and how we are to use them: “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.” Our Spiritual weapons include prayer, God’s Word, training in using our weapons, learning discipline and fellow soldiers. When the enemy tries to capture our thinking, we must use Scripture properly and wrestle wrong thoughts to the ground and take them prisoner, rendering them helpless. God’s thoughts are to control us, inspiring obedience. When we do these things, Satan’s strong holds crumble and images that he tries to lodge in our imaginations are purged from us. They are replaced with Godly thoughts and images. In the hymn, “Ye Soldiers of the Lord, Arise!” by Mrs. S. K. Bourne, we are challenged to battle: “Ye soldiers of the Lord, arise! The trumpet calls you from the skies; be strong in God, and in His might go forth the evil host to fight! For see, they gather far and near, their mocking bugle-call we hear—arise, and meet the pow’rs of sin, and in God’s name the battle win! Put on the armor of your Lord! His Holy Word your mighty sword; let faith’s tried shield turn ev’ry dart, and prayer and watching guard your heart. Your breast-plate on, and sword in hand, against the wiles of Satan stand, that in the end, when all is done, you may o’ercome thro’ Christ alone. O soldiers, haste to meet the foe! With loyal zeal to battle go! Your Captain calls you to His side, He waits your eager steps to guide.  His strength will help you on the field, till ev’ry enemy shall yield; and, when the victory is won, His voice will say, “Well done! well done!” And when the battle’s o’er, and soldiers fight no more, how sweet to rest when shadows come, and waken in the heav’nly home.” Selah! If the great armies of this world were no better prepared than much of God’s army is, what would be our fate?    Ron
