That Unique “Inner” Sanctuary

The dictionary defines “sanctuary” as “a holy place; a place for refuge or protection.” This refers to a building, cave or some other kind of shelter. A local church building and/or its auditorium is often referred to as a sanctuary. This kind of sanctuary is visible; it is in a place that can be located. There is, however, a unique “inner” sanctuary in all human beings. This place is often called the “heart” or “spirit.” Actually, it is that place that God made in our “being” for Him and us to interact with each other. Here we can find refuge, protection, help and rest. It is here that man meets with God! This “sanctuary” must be cleansed of all sin(s) (I John 1:9), before God will interact with us. When this is taken care of, we enjoy wonderful fellowship with our God. No outsiders can intrude. We are alone with God! In Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus put it this way to His disciples: “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” In the hymn, “Near to the Heart of God,” Cleland B. McAfee expressed it this way: “There is a place of quiet rest, near to the heart of God, a place where sin cannot molest, near to the heart of God. There is a place of comfort sweet, near to the heart of God, a place where we our Savior meet, near to the heart of God. There is a place of full release, near to the heart of God,  a place where all is joy and peace, near to the heart of God.” He then prayed a prayer which we should pray: “O Jesus, blest Redeemer, sent from the heart of God, hold us, who wait before Thee,  near to the heart of God.” For any and all who do not know Jesus as Savior and Lord, this sanctuary is cold and empty. As one wisely said, “There is a void in every man that only God can fill.” Selah! There is Someone who waits to meet with you in your “inner” sanctuary!  Be sure to “closet” yourself with Him often!   Ron
