Two Appointments

We make appointments; we keep them sometimes and cancel or change them other times. There are, however, two appointments that will be kept by all persons. The first one is found in Hebrews 9:27: “….it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.” The appointment with judgment will be kept by all who do not know Jesus as Savior and Lord. No one in his right mind wants to keep that appointment. The sentence will be pronounced; it will be carried out; there is no appeal! The penalty: separation from God and righteousness forever in Hell. The only way to avoid that appointment is found in the context of Hebrews 9:27. It is to receive Jesus as personal Savior and Lord. Any who do will keep the other appointment found in II Corinthians 5:9-10: “Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of Him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.” This is a judgment of our lives as born again people. It determines our rewards or loss of rewards and those rewards will be wonderful for those who have been faithful and a great regret to those who do not receive them. Will L. Thompson’s invitational hymn,”Softly and Tenderly, Jesus Is Calling,” speaks to this. The third stanza speaks to those who are outside of Christ: “Time is now fleeting, the moments are passing, passing from you and from me; shadows are gathering, deathbeds are coming, coming for you and for me.” The fourth stanza speaks to those who will receive Jesus as Savior and Lord: “O for the wonderful love He has promised, promised for you and for me! Though we have sinned, He has mercy and pardon, pardon for you and for me.” Selah! It is beyond astonishing that people will neglect dealing with their need of salvation, even refuse to believe that they need it, and end up lost forever because they choose to ignore God’s gracious offer of forgiveness and love!   Ron
