Phase 2-Ongoing

Yesterday, we looked at God’s purpose for the Law. Now that those who are born again by faith in Jesus as Lord and Savior are  no longer under the Law, how are we to look at God’s Law? Interestingly, directly or indirectly, all of the Ten Commandments (except the one about the Sabbath) are found in the New Testament after Calvary. However, “Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, for whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine” (I Timothy 1:9-10). If we have been credited with the righteousness of Christ and thereby the Law is not for us, it does, nevertheless, have a purpose for all who are redeemed. This ongoing purpose is found in Romans 8:3-4: “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” Here’s the difference: the first law in this passage does what the second Law cannot do. The Holy Spirit, operating in our new nature uses the Word of God to produce the righteousness of the Law in and through our lives; not the old Law but the righteousness of that Law. It is no longer, do it or else! Now, it is do it because we love Him and long to do righteousness and want to be like Him. Lillian Plankenhorn’s Gospel song expresses in a simple way how our hearts are changed by the law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus: “My desire, to be like Jesus;  My desire, to be like Him. His Spirit fill me, His love o’erwhelm me—In deed and word, to be like Him.” Selah! Christ’s Life in us manifests itself in righteousness as we learn to lovingly and obediently be guided by His Word. This is ongoing from the moment of the new birth and on into Heaven where we will be completely righteous.    Ron
