Really Helping Our Country

Do we really want to help our country? A quick answer might be: “yes, I do!” That, however, prompts another question: “do I want to do it God’s way or my way?” A thorough study of ancient Israel in the Old and New Testaments reveals what Israel wanted; they wanted to do it their way. The outcome was that they were enslaved, were given many bad leaders and were chastised and judged. They corrupted their nation and God allowed suffering and disaster to bring them to their senses. It looks very much like what is happening today in America and in other countries that have rebelled against God. Well, what can we do to help our country? If unsaved people have high standards of morality, that will help a little. However, real help can only come from people who know Jesus as Savior and Lord. If you read II Chronicles 7:14 carefully, you will notice these important words: “If My people, which are called by My Name.” There follow actions which God’s people are to take: “shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from Heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” O.K. Bring it up to date. First, we need to be genuinely converted. Then we are to make prayer a top priority and lead Godly, clean lives. At the same time, we need to witness to lost people. The more true Christians there are in our country, the greater the possibility of revival and spiritual awakening. There is another extremely important action to be taken seriously. We need to study candidates, listen carefully to them, review their records, determine their standards and vote accordingly. Good “feelings” don’t cut it! We’ve had some really bad leaders because of people going by their “feelings” instead of carefully seeking factual information. Katherine L. Bates gave us stirring thoughts in her hymn: “O Beautiful for Spacious Skies.” She wrote: “O beautiful for heroes proved in liberating strife, who more than self their country loved, and mercy more than life! America! America! May God thy gold refine, till all success be nobleness and every gain Divine!” Selah! Failure of true Christians to make an informed vote is inexcusable and offensive to the Author of Liberty! If all Christians took their responsibilities seriously, we could experience revival and God’s healing of our sin damaged land.   Ron
