Satan’s Scare Tactics

It’s no secret that Satan is a master of deceit. He doesn’t scare by appearing as some grotesque creature with an evil glint in his eyes. He is far more clever than that. He plays on our minds and emotions. He plants thoughts like these: “You have extreme standards and people will think that you have a ‘holier than thou’ attitude.” “You won’t be accepted!” “You’ll be thought to be a religious fanatic.” “People won’t listen to you; they will figure that you don’t live in the ‘real world.'” “You don’t want to be legalistic; people will turn you off.” With such appeal to our “flesh,” he has kept far too many from a whole-hearted commitment to Jesus. He suggests that the best way to reach people is to be with them; don’t be extreme; share some good times with them, albeit in moderation. If we are the same as they are, except in excess, we have no alternative lifestyle to offer. So-called “legalism” should never stop us from being holy! Legalism in the Biblical sense is trying to win God’s favor by our own efforts. We live Godly lives, not to escape God’s condemnation. We live Godly lives, with His help, because we love Him and trust His judgment. He knows what is best for us! After appealing to us to give ourselves wholly to God in Romans 12:1, Paul adds in Verse 2, “And be not conformed to this world:” Instead, “but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind,” Why? “that ye may prove” Prove (discern; demonstrate) what? “what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Elisha A. Hoffman wrote a hymn entitled, “Is Your All on the Altar?” In the third stanza, he grasps why God wants us to be holy, “O we never can know what the Lord will bestow of the blessings for which we have prayed, ’till our body and soul He doth fully control and our all on the altar is laid.” Selah! Someone wisely said, “The world has yet to see what God will do with the person who is wholly yielded to Him.” Those who have yielded a lot have discovered a lot of what He will do!  Ron
