If Control Were Up to Us

Have you ever stopped to think deeply on where it would leave us, if God relinquished His control on this world? The short answer is that we, along with all creation, would disintegrate, dissolve, vanish. Suppose, however, that we could continue to exist. Who would be able to provide all that is needed to feed the earth? Where would we get the raw materials to provide for life and industry? Where would we be able to get the air to breathe? What would restrain evil, not to mention who would define evil? On a more personal level, how would we know how to live? Where would we get knowledge and understanding? Someone might say we would get it by education. Who would have the understanding to create sound education? Trial and error? How would we discern error? In fact, how would we be able to make a human being? By bringing a baby into the world. If God were not in control, how could we bring that about? Who could have a clue where we came from, why we are here and where are we going? No God, no life and no function! Nothing adds up, no meaning, no purpose and no sense. Colossians 1:16-17 helps us see that God is the only One capable of holding it all together. God inspired Paul to write, “For by Him were all things created, that are in Heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by Him, and for Him: and He is before all things, and by Him all things consist (adhere, hold together).” Redd Harper gave us a Gospel song: I believe the title was, “Lord, Keep Your Precious Hand on Me.” It went something like this, “You laid your hand, mighty Lord, on the range, laid Your wonderful hand on the prairie. Lord, You poured forth the fountain; raised up the mountain, O Lord, keep your mighty hand on me. You touched Your clouds and made them rain, from the rain You made the sea, from the sea You formed the clouds to give us life abundantly. You have the earth and the sky at your command, Lord. O, please keep Your mighty hand on me.” Selah! God alone could create, control, provide, explain and keep functional, this immeasurable combination of worlds, planets, space, time and systems, etc. We can experience a personal relationship with this astonishing and amazingly loving Being.
