Reformation Needed?

Could the church have strayed away from the basics? For one example, Jesus, in His last words to His disciples said, “Go ye therefore, and teach (disciple) all nations.” (From Matthew 28:19). Did you notice that first word “Go?” How many times do churches today major on getting people to come? Over and over, preaching is presented as essential. How many churches have marginalized preaching and substituted all kinds of programs and activities as ways to evangelize? It seems in the early church, that most of the witnessing was done from person(s) to person(s). What about Prayer? Have methods and human efforts relegated prayer to an “emergency only” status? Are there even more basics that we have discarded or only rarely used? Do we even begin to grasp the reality of resurrection power? Do we have only a shell of Christianity that is mostly empty? Or has doctrine become a stopping place for our faith instead of being the foundation for a dynamic faith? Getting back to a deep understanding and internalizing of the Word will furnish the kind of courage expressed in the hymn, “How Firm a Foundation.” The author tells of God working in us and through us. “Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed, for I am thy God, I will still give thee aid; I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand, upheld by My gracious omnipotent hand….” (Rippon’s “Selection of Hymns”). Selah! Is a reformation from our ways to God’s ways overdue?  Ron
