The Guiding Light

There used to be a soap opera called “The Guiding Light.” I think that the only guidance it gave was how to waste time. Nevertheless, there is a true “Guiding Light.” Those shepherds, who witnessed such an amazing demonstration celebrating Christ’s birth, were given understanding (light) as to how they could find Him. It was God’s message to them in those ancient fields. In our world today, that light (God’s Word) is still shining in the darkness of this spiritual graveyard that we call the “earth.” The shepherds responded to the information given to them and found Jesus! “And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into Heaven, the shepherds said to one another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the lord hath made known unto us and they came with haste and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger” (Luke 2:15-16). They knew He was the Saviour! Philip P. Bliss, in his hymn, “The Light of the World Is Jesus,” put it this way, “The whole world was lost in the darkness of sin; the Light of the World is Jesus; like sunshine at noon-day His glory shone in, the Light of the world is Jesus. Come to the Light, ’tis shining for thee….” These lyrics seem to echo Paul’s inspired declaration in II Corinthians 4:6, “For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” That “Light” is still shining out from the pages of the Bible, when we go to Jesus and receive Him as Saviour and Lord. That light leads us home. Selah! There’s another lesson that we can learn from those simple shepherds. Luke 2:17 records the example which we are to follow. “And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.” If you have the light, shine it into the darkness of the minds of those who don’t know the way.   Ron
